What is Fowler Road Press?
Fowler Road Press began when I was asked by a local group to produce a book of photographs for them which they could sell as a fundraising tool. Not wanting to get involved with a full publishing company, Fowler Road Press was born to produce short-run books printed on full offset-litho presses. We have now produced three books for other authors interested in getting their work out into the world as well.
Who is Markham Starr?
I am a documentary photographer working from my home in North Stonington, Connecticut. My goal has been to preserve something of the traditional working cultures in New England, now rapidly disappearing. Over the past five years I have focused largely on the commercial fishermen in New England, but I have also documented such things as the last dairy farms in my home town and the closing of the last sardine cannery in America.
My Work:
While the first books I produced were largely photographinc in nature, my work has evolved to include text to broaden the story my subjects have to tell. The photographs are now enhanced with interviews with the people I am documenting. Other books to be published in the next year include In History's Wake: The Trap Fishermen of Rhode Island and End of the Line: The Closing of the Last Sardine Cannery in America My work has also been featured in magazines such as LensWork, The Sun, Rhode Island Monthly, Yankee Magazine and Edible Rhody. Additionally, all of my major photographic projects have been accepted into the permanent collection at Library of Congress.
